Interview with Pual Craig Roberts, Published on Kayhan Newspaper, Sept, 9, 2009

Paul Craig Roberts (born April 3, 1939) is an American economist and a
columnist for Creators Syndicate. He served as an Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan Administration earning fame as a co-founder of Reaganomics. He is a former editor and columnist for the Wall Street Journal, Business Week, and Scripps Howard News Service. Roberts has been a critic of both Democratic and Republican administrations.

Seyed Yasser Jebraily: In an article, you have called the post election riots in Iran“another US orchestrated ‘color revolution’. Here in Iran, despite a mountain of evidence showing collusion between Reformists and US to topple Iranian government, both reformists and the U.S. government are mocking ‘green revolution charges’. The court and the confessions are also being mocked. Is this another conspiracy? What they are looking for?

Paul Craig Roberts: Iranian “reformers” are not religious, regardless of whatever title they hold.  Iranian “reformers” want a secular Western society in which only money counts.  This makes some “reformers” susceptible to being manipulated by the US government. American neoconservatives wrote in advance of the Iranian election that a “green revolution” was organized.  The protesters themselves spoke of their “green revolution.”  For “reformers” to mock charges that the protests were part of a revolution is the way the “reformers” demonstrate that they, or most of the high level ones, are too highly placed for the government’s power to reach.

Jebraily: In past 30 years, I believe, the U.S. has used three kinds of strategies to topple Iranian government: military war (with arousing and supporting Saddam Hussein); Economic sanctions; and Soft War (Reformists have tied to undermine the ideological basis of Iranian system). First, I want to know your opinion and comment about this three-front war. Secondly, before 1979 Islamic revolution the U.S. was an ally to Iran. It seems that Islamic Republic has endangered the U.S. interests and it is instead interested in toppling down this government. Can you tell us how Iran has endangered US interests and in which aspects?

Roberts: Before the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the US was an ally to Iran because Iran was ruled by an American puppet government. Iran overthrew the US puppet government and, thus, reduced US world hegemony. The US has not forgot its loss of rule over Iran.

Jebraily: Iran has proven that it is not looking for nuclear weapon. Its nuke facilities are under direct supervision of IAEA. Why the U.S. wants to stop Iranian nuclear development?

Roberts: The US does not care about Iranian nuclear development.  The US is using the allegation of Iranian nuclear weapons in order to scare its European allies and American citizens into accepting warlike sanctions on Iran or, alternatively, a military attack.  The alleged Iranian bomb is like the alleged “weapons of mass destruction” that Iraq supposedly had (but did not).  It is an excuse for attack.

Jebraily: How much Obama’s Change has brought change to your country?

Roberts: Obama has brought no change to the US.  He is another Brownshirt leading the country deeper into a war-based police state.

Jebraily: We hear that there is a sharp divide between the U.S. public opinion and public policy. First, so where is Democracy? Second, since it is necessary for a government to have its people’s support, how the U.S. has been able to fill this void?

Roberts: In the US it is not necessary to have the people’s support.  It is only necessary to have the support of the financial banksters, the military/security complex, and AIPAC. These interest groups have the money that controls the US.

Jebraily:You believe that “anyone who depends on print, TV or right-wing radio media is totally misinformed”. Why?

Roberts: In the US the formerly independent media was concentrated during the Clinton administration in the hands of a few mega-conglomerates.  The value of the mega-companies depends on their federal broadcast licenses, which can be revoked by the government, and on advertising revenues, which can be boycotted by AIPAC, the financial banksters, and the military/security complex.  These facts have turned the US media into a propaganda ministry for whatever the government’s policy happens to be.

Jebraily: Do you see any link between Zionist ideology and the U.S. policies? It is said that the U.S. policies are influenced by Zionists. Do you agree?

Roberts: There are many important scholarly books, such as “The Israel Lobby” by John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen M. Walt that document the extraordinary power Israel has over US foreign policy.

Jebraily: What do think about the future of the U.S. imperialism? Some people believe that the country will collapse. Are you one of them? Do you have your evidences?

Roberts: America’s wars of aggression against Muslims are possible only because they are financed by the Chinese, Russians, Japanese, Canadians, South Koreans, Europeans, and Saudis, who purchase the US Treasury debt that is issued to cover the huge US budget deficit.  As the US economy continues to decline, the US dollar loses value and, therefore, the value of Treasury debt instruments lose value.  When the world no longer will finance US imperialism, that will be the end of it.

Jebraily: What has been the role of political and ideological basis of the U.S. government in its failures?

Roberts: The US government suffers from hubris and arrogance based in its belief in “American exceptionalism.”  This is the ideology that America is unique in its moral and democratic qualities and that no other country or society is as good or worthy; therefore, the US has the right and the obligation to impose its system on the rest of the world.

Jebraily: U.S.frequently condemns its opponent countries for lacking freedom of speech, and for human rights abuses. Can you tell us about speech freedom, religious freedom and human rights inU.S.?

Elections are routinely stolen in the US, but the elections do not matter.  The government is controlled not by the people but by a few powerful organized interest groups that have the financial power to make large campaign contributions to politicians in exchange for the politicians ruling in the interest of the organized interest groups.  The freedoms of speech, association, etc., that are listed in the Bill of Rights and comprise the constitutional amendments were damaged and set aside by the Bush/Cheney regime, which asserted that American civil liberty was an obstacle to the government’s ability to protect citizens from terrorists. Obama has not reversed the Bush regime’s downgrading of the US Constitution.
